Linda Edna Cardellini was born in Redwood City, California, to Lorraine (Hernan) and Wayne David Cardellini, a businessman. Her parents are Italian (from a paternal grandfather), Irish (from a mother), German and English. Linda was the youngest child of four in San Francisco Bay, California. At the age of 10 she became attracted to acting after performing in a play at school. She also continued doing school plays and community theatre. Linda attended Saint Francis High School Mountain View California. After graduating, she had to decide whether to go into New York to pursue theater or Los Angeles to pursue film and television. The choice was LA. Linda was chosen for her first part on the series Bone Chillers (1996). Freaks and Geeks, 1999 was her breakout role. The series won her the Emmy Award for Outstanding Casting for a Comedy Series. She played Lindsay Weir, a decathlete that was studying at the University of California.

She trained as an actor in the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London before launching her acting career on the British TV show Just William (2010). Cinderella was her first big part after her role in the role of Lady Rose MacClare, in Downton Abbey's period drama (2012-2015). James continued to play Countess Natasha Rostova in the television version of War & Peace (2016) and starred in several movies, including the action-packed film Baby Driver (2017), the period dramas Darkest Hour (2017), The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society (2018) and The Dig (2021), as well as the musicals Mamma Mia! We Go Back Again (2018) as well as Yesterday (2019). Her portrayal of Pamela Anderson in the biographical show Pam & Tommy (2022) received nominations for a Golden Globe and a Primetime Emmy Award.
